Parent the Heart Part II: Nine Functions of the Heart

Relections from Ed Miller …

Parenting Is Heart Work is one of my favorite books. I'm reading it again right now. I know, my wife is the co-author, but I really mean it. The book is based on a thorough study of the "heart" in the Bible. Most of the applications are about parenting, but the Biblical material about the importance of the heart is great material for everyone.

“The LORD does not look at the things man looks
at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the
LORD looks at the heart.”

-- 1 SAMUEL 16:7

God has a heart-based approach to working with people.
God is interested in hearts because that’s where real and lasting change takes place.

A focus on getting the right actions down teaches children image management. The message our children hear is that behavior is what’s important. Who cares about the heart?

It’s time for a heart revolution in parenting.

Behavior modification often works for the short term, but it does little to mold a child’s heart for the future. It’s like building a house of cards. No foundation and no depth mean the child’s whole life could fall apart at any moment.

BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION APPEALS TO CHILDRENRESIDENT SELFISHNESS.

There’s much at stake in raising children. When we take a heart approach to parenting, we partner with God in raising a future generation. Children learn to make changes on the inside, not just outwardly. Those changes last and become the basis for conviction and values that our children will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Real heart solutions in children’s lives start with your own
heart as a parent. One night when our boys were very young, I was taking care of them while Joanne was at work. I don't remember the specifics of what happened that night, but I remember being filled with anger in my heart. It scared me because I was starting to lose control. I didn't know what to do, so I sought out the help of a counselor. I wanted to get at the root causes producing these strong emotions. Over the coming months, I did a lot of interior work and God changed my heart. This was just the first of many times I had to take a step back and examine my heart.

More than 750 verses in the Bible use the term heartIt’s where longings grow, secrets are kept, pain is felt, plans are devised, commitments solidify, and character is developed. In short, the heart is a person’s center, the deepest spot in one’s life. The Bible talks about nine different functions of the heart. I'll list them all for you here and you can read about them in Parenting Is Heart Work. You can get started right now by completing a simple form and then downloading the first 38 pages of the book for free.

The Nine Functions of the Heart

1. The Heart is a Wrestling Place

3. The Heart Is Where We Feel Close to Others
4. The Heart is Where We Experience Emotions
5. The Heart is Where Temptations and Desires Develop

Finally, you may have heard that Scott and Joanne have a new book coming out early next year. Yes, that's right, another book! And this may be the best one yet. This book is for those parents who really want to dig deeply and understand how to make an impact on your child's inner life. Here's what Scott and Joanne have to say about this book.

“This is the most important and most strategic book I’ve written. The greatest gift parents can give to their kids is a strong conscience and a vibrant faith. Kids become internally motivated and their lives open up dramatically. Parents are amazed when they see the changes.”
—Dr. Scott Turansky

"Kids who are strong-willed don't typically respond to the reward/punishment approaches commonly used. That's because they're internally motivated already. This book will help you guide their internal motivation to do the right thing."
—Joanne Miller, RN, BSN
