4/14 Family Challenge 90-Day Adventure

Thoughts from Scott Turansky...

I just wanted to give you an update on a couple of things that are going on at the National Center for Biblical Parenting in regards to the 4/14 Family Challenge.

We launched two 4/14 Family Challenge 90-Day Adventure programs over the weekend. One in Colorado City, CO and the other in Rochester NY. We have four more that will launch in the next week or two. This is an awareness program to fan the flame of the 4/14 Family Challenge.

For 90 days, parents commit to doing spiritual training with their kids once a week. And we drive it through kids too, giving children ages 9 and up 13 spiritual questions to ask of their parents, based on a Joshua 4 model. The passage is about when Joshua led the people across the Jordan on dry ground, took the 13 stones out of the Jordan and then God said, "When your kids ask why this monument is here, tell them about God's greatness here and back when leaving Egypt." Here's the important piece that makes this 90 Day Adventure unique.

In that passage, who is responsible for initiating spiritual dialog in the family? It's the kids. But kids don't know what questions to ask their parents. Most kids don't even know what events led up to the decision of their parents to follow Jesus. As part of this program, we get the kids on board as well.

We're piloting this program in 6 churches before June, and then 25 churches in the second half of the year. Ed Miller and I have written a manual to make it all happen that we're giving away to these pilot churches. The goal is to get churches thinking about the role of parents as spiritual trainers of their children. If you know of a church that might like to be part of the pilot during the last half of this year, please let me know. Then we'll launch the whole program, looking for 200 churches in 2014.

Check out this video we used to launch the program in both locations. What do you think?

  1. I'd be interested in doing the pilot in the second half of the year. I'm looking for some practical and concrete steps we can introduce and reinforce to our families at our church.
