Touching Hearts and Minds

Thoughts from Ed Miller

I have long held the conviction that the Lord deals with us in our hearts and our minds.  John tells us that Jesus was "... full of grace and truth." (John 1:14) Many Christians seem to be out of balance on one side or the other. The heart has to do with our emotions, our values and our convictions. The mind is where we reason and think. Whole people cultivate both in their lives.

Byron and Beth Borger and I have often talked about the importance of having a thoughtful approach to faith and well as one that embraces our emotions and our heart. We worked together for many years in creating bookstores at InterVarsity Christian Fellowship retreats and conferences.

Byron and Beth run a lovely little store called Hearts and Minds Bookstore. It’s  a small store in Dallastown, PA just outside of York. What’s so special about this store?  The unique feature is its incredible reach given its size. This is because of the ministry of Byron and Beth and the wonders of modern technology. Let me tell you more.

Byron and Beth are people who are full of grace and truth. They are very warm and genuine and yet very deep thinkers. Byron in particular seems to know something about every book ever published! That's because Byron nurtures his mind through reading. Byron’s Booknotes Blog is read by people all over the world. If you want a recommendation about a book on a particular topic just reach out to Byron from the blog or call him at the store! He will get back to you with a brief annotated bibliography of the best books available on that subject. I challenge you to give it a try!

Byron and Beth also take this bookstore on the road! They set up a wonderful store at a variety of conferences every year. Now this is not just a small book table, but a real bookstore. It is packed with books on every subject imaginable.

I've had many conversations with Byron about books on parenting and family. He knows them all and has been very supportive of our resources at the National Center for Biblical Parenting. Our Biblical, practical and heart-based approach to parenting fits well with his philosophy of the importance of the heart and the mind. I encourage you to nurture both in your Christian life and in your parenting.

As a busy parent, how are you nurturing your heart and mind? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
